Think SMART!

When setting goals use the "SMART" format: That is, goals should be: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic

and Time bound! All of these are extremely important when moving in the direction of making a lifestyle change.

Furthermore, psychologists tell us that greater levels of success can be achieved by writing down the SMART goal. Apparently, the physical act of writing down the goal promotes greater success! It is not hard to see that saying, for example, "I'm going to start exercising, or eating healthier" may not be as strong of a personal commitment as writing down a plan to, walk for 30 minutes 4 days a week at the park, or increase your vegetable intake by 2 servings at lunch and dinner 3 days per week. I personally like to set up my goals on a calendar and then check off the days that I accomplished the goal. This helps me keep track of my successes and a good way to make sure that I meet my 4 day goal commitment. I also like to have a sense of accomplishment week to week and month to month. So, the take away when setting goals for success is to use a SMART goal format, write it down and keep track of your success!
