Weight loss promises; Buyer beware

Well it's that time of the year again where advertisers start to make promises for quick and easy weight loss. I heard one the other day on the radio " 20 pounds in just 7 days" for X amount of money, no need to exercise etc it's truly a miracle! Really? This is of course, the time of the year for advertising to play on peoples emotions because most of us will have put a few extra unwanted pounds so taking advantage of these emotions are how companies try to sell you "something" that will unlikely deliver. So, save your money! Most quick weight loss "scams" only work for the short-term. Where they miss the mark is that they don't CHANGE BEHAVIOR. I emphasize this because weight loss lies in the heart of behavioral change not some bottle with magic weight loss potion or methods that can not be sustained over a lifetime. If you are ready to make a real commitment to weight loss - start with one simple change. For example, start with breakfast. Can you reduce the sugar and creamer in your coffee by half? Can you eat a high protein or whole grain cereal 3 to 4 times per week instead of high fat calorie muffins or donuts each morning? Then move to the next meal etc. The point is make small but consistent changes. The experts tell us that behavioral change turns into habits after about 3 to 6 months. So find the lifestyle changes that you are willing to make through trial and error. Remember there is no magic or quick fixes. Commitment and consistency are what bring about lifestyle changes and it cost you nothing except in your time and effort. Use the money you'll save on treating yourself to something (not food related of course) for taking care of you! That is what good self-management is all about! Happy New Year Happy New You...
